Gender, Sex and Sexuality: What are the differences? Lewis Hancox answers

Blogged by Lewis Hancox (aka Mr Lewzer)

Nearer the start of my transition, I had a few people ask me ‘are you sure you’re not just a butch lesbian?’ As ridiculous as this may sound to some of you, it is an important question to address. How do you know when you’re transgender? I think the first step is to understand that your gender identity and sexuality are two separate things. People often think that being transgender is a form of being gay, or a sexual orientation. And what’s often more baffling is that your sex and gender are also two different things! It sounds like a minefield but it’s actually really simple once you get your head around it, and that’s why I wanted to make a video that tackles these misconceptions, also featuring Melka Drury.

Comedy is my passion and combining that with advice and education gives me the best of both worlds – knowing I’m helping people in some small way, whilst also entertaining and getting as creative as possible. This is the 2nd comedy education video I’ve made with All About Trans, the first one being about Transgender Toilet Tips. They’re an amazing organisation who do great work with trans people all over the UK, working towards not only more trans representation in the media but ensuring that representation is positive and accurate. I’m all about positivity, showing that you can transition and live a happy, healthy life! Having Intersex UK supporting the video is also a huge honour. Just like gender and sexuality, your sex isn’t always black and white. There definitely needs to be more awareness raised about intersex issues.

My aim is for people of all identities to tune into my You Tube videos, whether they like the humour, the advice or simply like listening to my Northern accent ramble on!
