We did it! On Road wins ‘Small charity, Big achiever’ award

We’re delighted that On Road, the charity behind All About Trans, was announced joint winner of the ‘Small charity, Big achiever’ category at the Third Sector Awards last Thursday. Alongside Autism Life Dogs, On Road was awarded the trophy for its work delivering All About Trans.

Alana Avery, Project Manager at On Road Media said “On Road is a tiny charity so we’ve had to be innovative, creative and nimble in our methods for achieving social change. We’re delighted to receive this recognition but the work wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance of our trans-led advisory group, facilitators and participants who bring enthusiasm and vigour to every interaction with the media.”

Since On Road began delivering All About Trans 6 years ago across the UK, over 250 volunteers and facilitators have met with more than 400 senior media professionals.

The work has led to the introduction of two trans characters played by Riley Carter-Millington on EastEnders and Annie Wallace on Hollyoaks, the award-winning BBC Two sitcom Boy Meets Girl starring All About Trans Patron, Rebecca Root. All About Trans worked with Mermaids to advise on new reporting guidelines for the Independent Press Standards Organisation and produced a series of shorts called My Trans Story created by filmmakers Fox Fisher and Lewis Hancox, some of which are hosted on All4.

Journalist, broadcaster and All About Trans co-founder Paris Lees said “when we founded All About Trans you only saw trans people in the media presented as objects of pity, ridicule or disgust. Most media professionals we spoke to had never even met a trans person before. I’m so proud of the team and everyone in the community who’s worked with us to open up the conversation and improve media representation and, hopefully, people’s lives.” The interactions with the media delivered by All About Trans have also led to three BBC Radio 1 documentaries presented by Paris Lees.

Collecting the award

Ayla Holdom, Helicopter Pilot with the National Police Air Service and All About Trans Advisor, accepted the award with On Road’s CEO and founder, Nathalie McDermott. She thanked Third Sector Awards for its recognition and support for our charity.

“On Road’s project helped give us a mainstream voice, recognition and most importantly, dignity of our own – these are the basis for changing lives not just of trans people, but all those around us. While we’re supported by so many diverse and wonderful volunteers, helping all areas of media to understand and know us, there is so much more we can and will go on to achieve.”

Huge thanks go to the All About Trans teams around the UK, including volunteers, media contributors, facilitators, partners and Advisors. Thank you for all the valuable support, guidance and energy.
